Commissioner Vassiliou welcomes Turku as European Capital of Culture 2011

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, attended the opening ceremony and show marking the start of Turku’s year as 2011 European Capital of Culture. The show, held by the Aura River and featuring breathtaking aerial performances, fire and fireworks, stunning choreography and music, was one of the biggest cultural events ever seen in Finland. Throughout the year, more than one thousand events will take place in Turku, as well as in Tallinn (Estonia), which shares the title of European Capital of Culture in 2011.
