Emily O’Reilly new European Ombudsman
Today the European Parliament elected Ms Emily O’Reilly as new European Ombudsman. She is the first woman to become European Ombudsman and she is currently the Ombudsman of Ireland.
She will take up the post of European Ombudsman on 1st October 2013, when Mr Diamandouros retires. She was supported by 359 MEPs in a secret plenary vote.
The role of the Ombudsman, established in 1995, is to investigate complaints about maladministration in the EU institutions and bodies. Any EU citizen, resident, or an enterprise or association in a Member State, can lodge a complaint with the Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman offers a fast, flexible, and free means of solving problems with the EU administration.
