European Parliament voted resolution to improve 2014 elections
According to the resolution voted today by the European Parliament, candidates for the job of president of the European Commission should present their political programmes in all EU countries and hold a series of public debates.
European political parties should be listed on ballot papers along with national ones, and name their candidates for president well before the elections, to ensure sufficient time to run EU-wide campaigns on European issues.
Recommendations to the EU member states and political parties for improving the organisation of the next European elections are set out in a resolution by Andrew Duff (ALDE, UK), adopted by 507 votes to 120 with 18 abstentions, which also takes up [ http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-13-215_en.htm ]key recommendations from the Commission on improving the organisation of the next European Parliament elections, due to take place on 22-25 May 2014.
The changes voted by the European Parliament are also supported by voters. A recent [ http://ec.europa.eu/public_opinion/archives/flash_arch_374_361_en.htm#364 ]Eurobarometer survey found that 84% of people think turnout in European elections would increase with more information about the EU’s impact on their daily lives, parties’ programmes in the Parliament and about the elections themselves.
73% believe more information about candidates’ European political affiliations would encourage people to vote, while 62% think having party candidates for Commission President and a single voting day would help bolster turnout.
