First successful European Citizen’s Initiatives
The first eight European Citizens’ Initiatives (ECIs), launched between May and August 2012, will close for signatures tomorrow, the 1st of November. Three initiatives have reached the target of one million signatures in at least seven Member States, as required by the ECI legislation:
– “Right2Water” which states that water is a public good and not a commodity,
– “One of Us” which seek to end EU financing of activities which presuppose the destruction of human embryos, and
– “Stop Vivisection” aimed at ending live animal experimentation.
National authorities now have three months to validate the signatures and the Commission will then also have three months to examine the initiative and decide how to act on it.
