Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union officially opened
The Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union was officially opened by President Dalia Grybauskaitė today in Vilnius with a special event.
The event was attended by the EC President José Manuel Barroso and members of the Commission, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, journalists from the EU member states, as well as outstanding representatives of Lithuanian culture and art, political figures and diplomats.
In her speech President Grybauskaitė undelined the Lithuanian Presidency priorities: financial stability, economic growth and job creation, especially for young people, more open and more secure Europe.
According to the President, it was symbolic that Lithuania took over the Presidency from Ireland: it was during the Irish Presidency in 2004 that Lithuania became a member of the Union.
